Modern pentathlon - what is it? Events, rules, and format.
An épée in one hand, a swim cap in the other, with an obstacle course and a pistol (laser, don’t worry) along the way. That’s how, in one sentence, we’ve described the sport of modern pentathlon.
What does this multi-sport event consist of, how are points counted, what does a competition day look like, and where did this sport even come from? For all that and much more, welcome to another SMMASH guide!
What is modern pentathlon and where did it come from?
Modern pentathlon is an Olympic multi-sport event governed by UIPM (the international federation for this discipline).
Formally, it consists of 5 disciplines divided into 4 blocks. The word “modern” mainly serves to distinguish it from the ancient pentathlon. To be clear (before we go any further), a quick clarification: it has nothing to do with the so-called athletics pentathlon (ancient), which consists of completely different disciplines.
What events make up modern pentathlon today?
We admit the name can be a bit misleading, because in practice—yes, there are 5 disciplines, but they are held within 4 events: épée fencing, the obstacle course*, swimming, and laser run.
Épée fencing
Two athletes face each other, and their bout lasts until one touch or up to one minute. The system depends on the specific competition, but usually it follows a round-robin format.
Obstacle course
In practice, this means OCR100 (which we cover in another article on our sports blog). Here too, athletes compete in pairs. Two competitors take on the course side by side, overcoming a set of standard obstacles. For fans of OCR racing, it’s familiar territory.
Swimming
Competition takes place in a standard 50-meter pool, where each athlete must complete a set distance using freestyle.
Running combined with laser pistol shooting (the so-called laser run)
It consists of alternating shooting and running series, so it’s somewhat similar to running intervals with breaks for shooting using special devices. As you can see, it combines 2 separate disciplines (running + shooting), which is why the whole event can still be called a pentathlon.
* This was introduced to replace horse riding, which had remained an essential part of modern pentathlon up to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (2028).
Scoring in modern pentathlon. How are points awarded and counted?
For the final result in each event, athletes receive points based on converting their time or result into a set number of points. In swimming, a time of 1:10 gives 250 points, and every 0.2 seconds faster or slower means 1 point up or down. In laser run, a time of 13:20 gives 500 points, and each second equals 1 point. You can find the exact conversion tables for fencing and the obstacle course in the UIPM rules.
How a modern pentathlon competition unfolds - step by step
Standardization in pentathlon applies both to the types of events contested and to their order. So first comes fencing, then the obstacle course, then swimming, and finally the laser run. Women and men, of course, compete separately, while the format determines how each stage is run.
Taking part in OCR100 or fencing “forces” pair-based competition, while running and swimming are events in which a larger group of pentathletes can compete at the same time.
